JEFF LYNNE'S ELO: 2017 WEMBLEY DATE + TICKETS

Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! Jeff Lynne's ELO announced earlier this morning [Monday 27th June] that their recent hugely successful UK and European tour in support of latest album "Alone In The Universe" will be followed up next year with a prestigious date at Wembley Stadium in London "for one night only" on Saturday 24th June 2017.
The press release is timed perfectly following their amazing Glastonbury debut yesterday. Jeff Lynne's ELO have now played in front of upwards of 300,000 people in 2016 so a huge ELO stadium gig next Summer is sure to be sold out in record "Time" as Jeff celebrates the record breaking 2005 compilation "All Over The World" selling over one million copies. Tickets are priced between £35.00 each and £110.00 each [*plus booking fees] thus:

elobeatlesforever (elobf) recommend Jeff Lynne's ELO to those enlightened folks who love ELO, Jeff Lynne, Roy Wood, 'Brum Beat', The Idle Race, The Traveling Wilburys, The Move, The Beatles and related artistes.

REVIEW: JEFF LYNNE'S ELO @ GLASTONBURY 2016

Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! Jeff Lynne's ELO duly made their much anticipated bow on the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury 2016 and proceeded to literally wow the near 150,000 festival goers in attendance with an inspired performance of their greatest hits to truly steal the show both in person at Worthy Farm and online "All Over the World".
The ELO maestro conducted a fifteen [15] song cameo that encompassed the ELO singles career from 1971-80 with a number of songs omitted from their recent "Alone In The Universe" arena tour with "When I Was A Boy" pleasingly retained for the 75 minute show. Conditions were damp but that did not deter those "Standin' In The Rain" from responding - and dancing - in response to the likes of "All Over The World", "Shine A Little Love", "Turn To Stone", "Sweet Talkin' Woman" and "Roll Over Beethoven".
This was very much an up tempo set with just the one slower number included and it was - rather aptly - capped by the nations #1 feel good song "Mr. Blue Sky" in such atypical British Summer conditions. It will now be interesting to see if this enjoyable parade of ELO classics will propel best-selling compilation "All Over The World" back up the UK Top 10, maybe even to #1.
Jeff Lynne's ELO performed these songs at Glastonbury 2016: "Evil Woman" ~ "Showdown" ~ "All Over The World" ~ "When I Was A Boy" ~ "Livin' Thing" ~ "10538 Overture" ~ "Rockaria!" ~ "Shine A Little Love" ~ "Wild West Hero" ~ "Telephone Line" ~ "Turn To Stone" ~ "Don't Bring Me Down" ~ "Sweet Talkin' Woman" ~ "Mr. Blue Sky" ~ "Roll Over Beethoven"
Jeff Lynne's ELO were: Jeff [Lead vocals/guitars] ~ Richard Tandy [Piano/keyboards/vocoder] ~ Mike Stevens [Musical Director/guitars/vocals] ~ Milton McDonald [Guitars/vocals] ~ Lee Pomeroy [Bass/vocals] ~ Donavan Hepburn [Drums] ~ Bernie Smith [Keyboards] ~ Marcus Byrne [Keyboards] ~ Iain Hornal [Backing vocals/guitars] ~ Melanie Lewis McDonald [Backing vocals] ~ Rosie Langley [Violin] ~ Amy Langley [Cello] ~ Jess Cox [Cello]

2017 UK ELO FAN CONVENTION?

Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! Now that Jeff Lynne and ELO are firmly back in the embrace of the wider music loving public, elobeatlesforever (elobf) would be most interested to know whether there is an appetite in the ELO/Jeff Lynne, Roy Wood, Bev Bevan and related artistes fan community for an UK ELO Fan Convention during 2017. This is not something that I could possibly organize without others but I do have some ideas as to what would be involved if there were solid and consistent support for such an event:
  • sponsored by elobeatlesforever (elobf) and [a] suitable commercial partner[s]
  • non-profit
  • to be held in the West Midlands
  • to be held on or over a weekend
  • an acceptable ticket price or entry charge?
  • live on stage Q&A's by KJS with ELO and related artistes/celebrities
  • an ELO and related memorabilia display/exhibition
  • an ELO and related swap shop
  • meet 'n' greet
  • loads of ELO music piped through the PA!
  • [a] live performance[s] by [an] ELO tribute band[s]
  • live performances by ELO influenced artistes
  • food and, of course, a bar
  • absolutely no KJS jokes!
Yours Truly KJS would greatly appreciate your ideas, thoughts and feedback regarding the above soundbites via elobeatlesforever (elobf) itself, direct email or our social media outlets. Thanx!

CAUGHT LIVE [3]: JEFF LYNNE'S ELO @ BIRMINGHAM 24/06/16

Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! I had to pinch myself a couple of times last night [Friday 24th June] as Yours Truly KJS settled down to see my third Jeff Lynne's ELO concert of 2016 at The Barclaycard Arena [formerly the NIA] in "Down Home Town" Birmingham. Yours Truly KJS has been blessed to see [and review] the likes of Paul McCartney, Elton John, Fleetwood Mac, Bryan Adams and Brian Wilson perform live in the last twelve months but the gigs featuring Jeff's latest ELO incarnation - two in Brum and one in Liverpool - have been, literally, out of this world. I was determined to make sure that I absorbed and fully experienced this jaw-dropping, amazing spectacle in the very centre of the ELO heartland - and so it was. JEFF LYNNE has not only assembled a tight and cohesive band, his team have also re-invented the term astounding with an audio visual light fantastic presentation that not only amplifies the ELO experience "Above The Clouds", it also elevates the audience to a "Destination Unknown".
After a thoroughly impressive and completely enjoyable support set by Dublin quintet THE SHOOS, the capacity crowd was literally "Blown Away" by a nineteen [19] song set that took us right through the ELO songbook all the way from "10538 Overture" to "Secret Messages" and beyond to "Alone In The Universe". The 'new' songs unveiled on this tour - particularly "When I Was A Boy" - sit perfectly amongst the classics we all know and love. The spine tingling intro of "Tightrope" is a masterstroke, the projected imagery of "Wild West Hero" and "Turn To Stone" is superb and the presentation of "Secret Messages", "Evil Woman" and "All Over the World" [and everything else!] continues to send the fans into orbit. The stompers "Rockaria!", "Showdown" and  "Roll Over Beethoven", naturally, brought nearly all to their feet and the familiar, joyful, ultimate feel good anthem "Mr. Blue Sky" once again provided the ultimate fanfare for band and attendee alike. Make no mistake about it, this was a world class, Premier League gig of the highest order to send avid and casual ELO fan alike into raptures. We now look forward to Glastonbury and, after that, those US dates ...

SILVER CLEF: ANOTHER AWARD FOR JEFF LYNNE

Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! The much respected Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy charity announced earlier today that The London Evening Standard Icon Award - also known as an O2 Silver Clef - will be awarded to ELO maestro Jeff Lynne on Friday 1st July 2016 at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London. In the press release, Jeff stated:

"I am thrilled to be receiving the Icon Award. There are so many people who benefit from the charity’s work and I am honoured to have been made part of it."

He was joined by Jon O’Donnell [MD of ESI Media] who added: "ESI Media, home of the The London Evening Standard, is extremely proud of its continued association with Nordoff Robbins and all the fantastic work they do. This year we're delighted to be presenting the Icon Award to a giant of the Music Industry on behalf of a giant hearted charity."
Produced by Jeff Lynne in aid of Nordoff-Robbins: The "Wonderful Land" single [1993] ...
Jeff Lynne has been involved with Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy for some time. You may remember that he produced a single in aid of the charity back in 1993 entitled: "Wonderful Land" b/w "Nivram" by Hank Marvin featuring Mark Knopfler and recorded at Abbey Road Studios.

Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy is the largest independent music therapy charity in the UK, dedicated to changing the lives of vulnerable and isolated people. They support thousands of people through their own centres and by working in partnership with a wide range of organisations including care homes, schools and hospitals. Music therapy is the specialist use of music that aims to facilitate physical and emotional well-being, and to promote the development and retention of key communication skills. A wide range of instruments can be used in music therapy, including the voice, and the music created is often improvised. Music therapists support people to develop their own ways of being musical in order to explore their potential and connect with the world around them. Donations can be made to the charity via this link thus: www.nordoff-robbins.org.uk/donate

Yours Truly KJS and elobeatlesforever (ELOBF) wish to congratulate Jeff Lynne for this latest recognition in a long line of achievements.

Jeff Lynne's ELO
After a stint with classic Birmingham bands The Idle Race and The Move, Jeff Lynne co-founded The Electric Light Orchestra in 1971, one of the most successful groups of the seventies and eighties. Multiple hit singles and best selling albums followed making Jeff's anthemic ELO songs some of the most loved and recognisable of the last four decades. Jeff went on to a successful solo career and worked with many of his musical heroes including Brian Wilson, Paul McCartney, Del Shannon and The Everly Brothers. He also found time to co-found the ultimate 'supergroup' in The Traveling Wilburys, who included pals Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, George Harrison and Roy Orbison in their ranks. Find out what the driving force and creative mind behind ELO is currently up to via his official web site thus:
jefflynneselo.com

Roy Wood
The co-founder of The Move and ELO and the founder of Wizzard, The Helicopters et al will [hopefully] be on the road again during 2015! Find out where to see Dr. Roy Wood and what he is up to with his Rock 'n' Roll Bandvia his official web site thus:

The Orchestra
Former members of ELO and ELO Part II: Mik Kaminski, Louis Clark, Eric Troyer, Parthenon Huxley, Glen Burtnik and Gordon Townsend continue to tour the world extensively. Find out where to see them via their official web site thus:

Quill
Legendary Midlands Celtic-tinged rockers Quill, led by the incomparable Joy Strachan-Brain, have built up an impressive live reputation over a four [4] decade span and now feature Tony Kelsey and Abby Brant in their ranks. Find out where to see them via their official web site thus:

The Trevor Burton Band
Trevor Burton will be performing regularly at various venues in the Midlands with Pez Connor, Bill Jefferson and [occasionally] Abby Brant. Find out where on their web site thus:

The ELO Experience
This fantastic Hull based ELO tribute band deservedly won the National UK Tribute Awards in 2013 and they continue to faithfully reproduce classic Electric Light Orchestra hits [and more] live. Find out where to see them now via their official web site thus:

Explosive Light Orchestra [ExpLO]
Not only an ELO tribute act but an original, independent artiste in their own right, The Explosive Light Orchestra - a.k.a. Symphonika - have reproduced the exciting works of ELO at packed theatres and live music venues all around Europe. Find out where to see them now via their official web site thus:

ALL OVER THE WORLD HITS MIDWEEK CHART HIGH

Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! The Official Album Chart Top 100 Update revealed earlier today [Monday 13th June] the happy news that classic ELO compilation "All Over The World" has re-entered the UK Top 10 at a best-ever placing of #4 following its CD re-release and debut in 2LP vinyl three [3] days ago. If AOTW manages to "Hold On Tight" at #4 or even #5 when the full chart is published on Friday 17th June, it will eclipse the previous chart high of #6 achieved back in June 2005 in its first week of release.

"All Over The World" has been joined by "Pure McCartney" at #3 although, sadly, the Concord re-issue of The Traveling Wilburys Collection has failed to dent the chart at this stage.

ELO Beatles Forever [ELOBF] recommends "All Over The World" by Electric Light Orchestra  to those enlightened folks who enjoy the music of ELO, Jeff LynneRoy WoodThe MoveThe Idle Race'Brum Beat'The Beatles and related artistes.

SLEEVE TO SLEEVE: ALL OVER THE WORLD

Through The Years: "All Over The World" in 2005, 2011 and now 2016 ...
Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! Perhaps this article should be subtitled "I'm Sleeving You". The latest reboot of the classic ELO compilation "All Over The World" by Sony on Friday 10th June - just in "Time" for their imminent Glastonbury bow - revealed a subtle change in sleeve artwork as well as a long overdue debut in 2LP vinyl. Indeed, it's no surprise that "All Over The World" recently broke the ELO chart run record [currently at 110 weeks] thanks to the success of "Alone In The Universe" and those Jeff Lynne's ELO live dates in April and May.
Colour Contrast: "All Over The World" ...
"All Over The World" has now been launched on three [3] occasions. Following its original release in June 2005 - reaching #6 - AOTW was then re-issued in June 2011 in an ELO spaceship festooned cardboard slip sleeve with the original CD underneath, reaching a respectable #22. The new June 2016 version also sports a cardboard slip sleeve [and the original CD again] alongside its arrival in rather magnificent virgin vinyl.

We should expect to see a chart return for "All Over The World" next Friday 17th June and an extension of that chart run after what Yours Truly KJS expects will be a show stealing Glastonbury set by Jeff Lynne's ELO on Sunday 26th June, starting at approx. 4:00PM for 75 minutes.

ALL OVER THE WORLD: NEW CD EDITION TOO!

With many thanx to ELO superfan and collector Dave Jones and the folks at Tallbird Records ...
Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! The above photograph recently published by Tallbird Records in Chesterfield on their Facebook page has caught out Yours Truly KJS and ELO Beatles Forever [ELOBF] because it appears to show that the artwork makeover for the newly released 2LP vinyl edition of "All Over The World" has also been read across to a new 2016 CD edition packaged in a rather fetching new cardboard slip sleeve with a nice plug for "Alone In The Universe" on the reverse side. We missed it! #apologies

REVIEW: PAINFUL KISS [Robin George & Dangerous Music]

Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! Robin George is far from living in exile and still inventing great new guitar laden music in his Andalusian home studio. The Wulfunian rocker has a rich legacy of musical collaborations with the likes of The Move, ELO and Wizzard founder Roy Wood, Climax Blues Band and ELO Part II founder Pete Haycock, Robert PlantMagnum and a whole host of world musicians in a career spanning over thirty [30] years, literally dozens of albums and hundreds of original compositions. Regular visitors to ELO Beatles Forever will also be familiar with his "LovePower and Peace" opus and his immense contribution to Pete Haycock's Climax Blues swansong "Broke Heart Blues".

New album "Painful Kiss" by Robin George & Dangerous Music [Angel Air #SJPCD481] - released on Friday 20th May - features the core trio of Charley Charlesworth [Bass], Charlie Morgan [Drums] and Robin [Guitars/vocals], aided and abetted by the talents of Jacqui Williams, Mel Collins and the late, great Pete Haycock.
RG's "LovePower and Peace" and "Broke Heart Blues" releases were also reviewed by Yours Truly KJS ...
Yet"Painful Kiss" is far more than just a 'Best Of' collection of new recordings. As an example, the scorching blues of "Bluesong" - one of many highlights - is balanced perfectly by the reflective "Oxygen" with opening title track "Painful Kiss" grabbing your attention with its many musical influences followed by the raucous rocker "Lonesome Daze". The polished production and clear vocals mean that this particular delicious dozen keeps drawing you to either crank up the volume on your stereo or plug in the headphones for closer inspection, particularly with "Catarina" and "Pride". My personal faves are the Haycock tinged numbers but "The American Way" is standout sheer class as is the ethereal "LovePower And Peace".

As always with albums like this, after a few listens you are always pressing the 'repeat' button and left hoping to also see and hear these tracks live and unleashed - by the way, that's a hint! Not only is this record a fine overview of Robin's hefty songbook, "Painful Kiss" is also a worthy introduction to RG for the uninitiated. [8/10]

Trax: "Painful Kiss" ~ "Lonesome Daze" ~ "Catarina" ~ "The Rubicon" ~ "Coccoon" ~ "Pride" ~ "The American Way" ~ "Bluesong" ~ "LovePower and Peace" ~ "World" ~ "Heaven" ~ "Oxygen"

REVIEW: THE LEXICON OF LOVE II [ABC]

Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! ABC are another one of my 'other' fave bands aside from, of course, from those artistes in the ELO universe. Their '82 classic album "The Lexicon Of Love" boasted the production finesse of Trevor Horn, the sublime string arrangements of Anne Dudley, the most biting yet lovelorn lyrics of angst ridden modern romanticism, the verve and style of Martin Fry and, of course, three [3] Top 10 singles.

So, when it was announced in April 2016 that a sequel was to be released in late May, almost 34 years after the original, the attention of Yours Truly KJS was most certainly grabbed. The cynic in me thought that we might expect a pale imitation of ABC's finest eighties hour and the fan in me hoped for a return to the polished pop poetry that "All Of My Heart", "Poison Arrow" and "The Look Of Love" delivered first time around.

"The Lexicon Of Love II" [Virgin/EMI #CDV3150] is most definitely more of the latter than the former with ten songs signalling a long overdue return to form either side of a trademark orchestral opening and reprise. There is a maturity born of experience throughout the lyrics of this album in tackling the tricky themes of love, loss and passion. Lead single "Viva Love" is a tempting appetiser for great ABC songs with upbeat dance tune "The Flames Of Desire", the anthemic duo "Singer Not The Song" and "The Ship Of The Seasick Sailor" nicely balanced by ballads "Ten Below Zero" and "Kiss Me Goodbye". The familiar vocal feel of "The Love Inside The Love" is certainly reminiscent of "By Default By Design" and "United Kingdom" [from 1983's "Beauty Stab"] too. My fave track, however, the sublime, perfect pop of pensive "Confessions Of A Fool" - a track that keeps prompting me to ramp up the volume in my car and wind down the windows!

"The Lexicon Of Love II" has a sweet Summer vibe to it and, if it was a gamble by Martin Fry, then it has almost certainly paid off. My positive opinion of this welcome new ABC record is supported by the fact that it entered the Official UK Album Chart at a very respectable #5 last week. I look forward to seeing the band live at Birmingham Symphony Hall in October and hopefully a delicious vinyl edition in the near future. [9/10]

Trax: "The Flames Of Desire" ~ "Viva Love" ~ "Ten Below Zero" ~ "Confessions Of A Fool" ~ "Singer Not The Song" ~ "The Ship Of The Seasick Sailor" ~ "Kiss Me Goodbye" ~ "I Believe In Love" ~ "The Love Inside The Love" ~ "Brighter Than The Sun" ~ "Viva Love Reprise"

HYDE PARK AFTERGLOW FUELS LONG CHART RUN

Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! Yours Truly KJS and ELO Beatles Forever [ELOBF] wish today [Sunday 5th June] to salute the stellar sales performance of the best selling Jeff Lynne's ELO DVD and Blu-Ray "Live In Hyde Park" in the Official Music Video Chart Top 50.
Released by Eagle Vision on Friday 11th September 2015 and complete with the acclaimed documentary "Mr. Blue Sky: The Story Of Jeff Lynne & ELO", the audio visual spectacular has spent 37 of the 39 weeks [or 9 months] since its release in the chart - including four [4] weeks at #1 - and an impressive 20 weeks in the Top 10, proving that the enduring popularity of the music of the Electric Light Orchestra is still "Burning Bright" on the way to 45 years after their debut self-titled album [or "No Answer" in the States] was issued in December 1971.

CAUGHT LIVE: MIKE STEVENS [City Talks: Light Up The Night]

Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! It was a real pleasure for Yours Truly KJS to be in attendance for the latest Birmingham City University City Talks event in the Adrian Boult Hall within Birmingham Conservatoire last night [Friday 3rd June] as Julian Lloyd Webber conducted an interesting and thought provoking interview with Mike Stevens ahead of the formal presentation of his Honorary Fellowship by BCU Vice Chancellor Cliff Allan.

The former Birmingham School of Music [BSM] student - known by many as the Musical Director for Take That and Jeff Lynne's ELO - was asked about subjects including his long career, TT's's use of "Mr. Blue Sky" with "Shine", his classical training, how he approached working with Jeff Lynne, his thoughts on the necessity for reading versus memorising music and who he would have also liked to work with - the answer being the late David Bowie and Peter Gabriel.

Mike told those assembled of his early ventures from the classical to progressive rock and beyond with stories of how he was signed to RCA Records thanks to a chance meeting with Leee John [later of Imagination] and how he also came to work with the likes of Dionne Warwick [at somewhat short notice], The Temptations, Bill Withers, Annie Lennox, Take That, 10ccGraham Gouldman and many other greats, not forgetting that Mike also performed with ELO Part II founding member Pete Haycock and his band back in the day too.
Mike also worked with the late, great Pete Haycock [Photos: Stefan Raupp] ...
The entertaining and informative evening discourse also included a nice, hearty congratulatory message from Jeff Lynne and also an affirmatory quote from Gary Barlow who stated recently: "I can’t imagine ever touring without him!" followed by the presentation and accompanying applause.
Lighting Up The Night: Mike Stevens with Yours Truly KJS ...
Mike will of course be performing with Take That for their 9th July spectacular at Hyde Park and with Jeff Lynne's ELO for their June dates at Manchester, Birmingham and Glastonbury as well as those American gigs at Radio City Hall [a venue he has yet to play] in New York and the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles. Much congrats are again extended by ELO Beatles Forever [ELOBF] to Mike Stevens upon his receiving this award in recognition of his musical journey.
