CAUGHT LIVE [3]: SIGHT 'N' SOUND

Sight 'n' Sound last night were [L-R]: Paul Trappett; Brian Eustace; Warren Shaw; Neil Craddock
Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! The final Sight 'n' Sound gig of the year [and my third of 2014] was at The Tackeroo in Hednesford last night [Saturday 29th November] in front of a healthy and energetic bunch of attendees. Sight 'n' Sound are a band with rich heritage of former members and contributors including Mike SheridanGeoff TurtonRick PriceKelly Groucutt and Roger 'Ollie' Spencer with many connections to the ELOBF universe with its roots in the 'Brum Beat' boom of the sixties and a legendary live reputation - complete with their amazing trademark harmonies - still intact after a two [2] decade hiatus.

The band were missing Joe Bartnicki on stage [due to a recent wrist operation] on the night save for his joining the remaining quartet for a note perfect acapella rendition of Billy Joel's "The Longest Time". And make no mistake about it, this was an impressive and utterly professional show with Brian Eustace performing guitar heroics at times, particularly with "Hotel California". In an extended set of two [2] halves, the band delivered the hits of Starship, REO Speedwagon, Chicago, Kansas, Queen, The Eagles, John Miles, The Doobie Brothers, Journey, Toto and, of course, the Electric Light Orchestra complete with a fantastic new medley of Four Seasons songs.
Once again, the highlight of the evening for me was their ELO medley comprising a nice acapella intro of "Wild West Hero" that lead into "Sweet Talkin' Woman" and a superb full length rendition of "Mr. Blue Sky". If nothing else, one of the highlights of 2014 has to be the return of  Sight 'n' Sound with their longstanding live reputation remaining not only intact, but enhanced. Go see 'em in 2015 folks!

Tackeroo set #1: "We Built This City"; "Can't Fight This Feeling"; "Hard Habit To Break"; "The Longest Time" [Acapella]; "Bohemian Rhapsody"; "Hotel California"; ELO Medley: "Wild West Hero" [Acapella]/"Sweet Talkin' Woman"/"Mr. Blue Sky"; "Music"
Tackeroo set #2: "Carry On My Wayward Son"; "Take It On The Run"; "MacArthur Park"; "You're The Inspiration"; Four Seasons Medley: "Let's Hang On"/"Working My Way Back To You"/"Who Loves You"/"Oh, What A Night [December 1963]"; "Rosanna"; "China Grove"; "Any Way You Want It"; Queen Medley: "Fat Bottomed Girls"/"A Kind Of Magic"/"Hammer To Fall"; "Desperado"; "We Are The Champions"

Sight 'n' Sound are: Paul Trappett [Keyboards/vocals]; Brian Eustace [Guitars/vocals]; Neil Craddock [Bass/vocals]; Warren Shaw [Drums/vocals] and Joe Bartnicki [Guitar/vocals]. You can check out all the latest happenings via their: Sight 'n' Sound Facebook page.

Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! After a four [4] month hiatus, The Trevor Burton Band returned in triumph to Katie Fitzgerald's in Stourbridge last Saturday night [22nd November 2014]. Appearing fresh from the sell-out 'Stand Up & Rock!' tour, an inspired Trevor Burton - together, of course, with cohorts Pez Connor and Bill Jefferson - thrilled the healthy audience with an electric performance of his own material intermingled with his unique take on classics by Traffic, Cream, Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix [and not a few others] in a variety of musical styles.

Set list: "Hit The Road Again", "Little Rachel", "Down The Road", "Tough Enough", "I'm Alright", "Too Unkind", "Down Down Down", "Ain't No Brakeman", "Dear Mr. Fantasy", "Heartbreak Hotel", "Sunshine Of Your Love", "Johnny Too Bad", "Hey Joe", "Mystery Train"
Another Crawford Cracker: Trevor Burton receives his surprise portrait ...
The highlight of the evening was surely springing a certain surprise on Trevor during the break as Yours Truly KJS presented The Move co-founder with another fantastic portrait by the exceptionally talented [and ELOBF featured] artist Jennifer Crawford to recognize both his fifty [50] years in the business and also the appreciation of his many fans.

The Trevor Burton Band were: Trevor Burton [Lead vocals/guitars]; Pez Connor [Bass/backing vocals] and Bill Jefferson [Drums/percussion]. Find out more about The Trevor Burton Band [including their current gig schedule] via their official web site thus:

CAUGHT LIVE: 21 TODAY: THE J4T21 MEMORIAL CONCERT

Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! The 21 Today: Justice 4 The 21 Memorial Concert at Birmingham Town Hall last Thursday 20th November far exceeded the expectations and hopes of lead campaigner Julie Hambleton and organiser Phil Hatton as a plethora of renowned Midlands artistes and celebrities came together to give their talents freely to not only remember the tragic victims of 21st November 1974 but also celebrate their lives and honour the sacrifice and efforts of the emergency services, many taxi drivers and Salvation Army volunteers on that fateful night.

Hosted by the effervescent Historian compere Carl Chinn, the event commenced with a poignant rendition of the same portion of Tchaikovsky symphony by acclaimed violinist Shi Ling Chin accompanied by pianist Charles Matthews, the same piece of music as that which was performed at Birmingham Town Hall on that very night back in 1974. Former ELO members Dave Scott-Morgan and Martin Smith were next up as they performed the event anthem "21 Today" with the assistance of Hossam Ramzy, Mandy Scott-Morgan and classical musicians from Birmingham Conservatoire, followed by a solo demonstration of the tabla prowess of the Egyptian percussionist.

Steady Hands then impressed with their duo of compositions including "Mulberry Bush", a song born out of the ashes of one of the bomb sites. The legendary Steve Gibbons, initially solo before being joined by Dave Pegg [Fairport Convention], then continued proceedings with a Dylanesque selection of songs [and a dedication to the late Mike Burney] capped by a nice cover of The Beatles' "Abbey Road" classic "Come Together" to complete the first act.

The second half of the concert began with an informative and educational presentation before the moving and emotional public acknowledgement of the emergency services on that night. King Pleasure & The Biscuit Boys then arrived on stage - with former Wizzard drummer Charlie Grima in tow providing percussion - to deliver another trademark energetic set before Jasper Carrott introduced Quill and long time pal Bev Bevan, who enchanted the audience with their trio of Celtic tinged originals. A second stage-filled performance of "21 Today" completed the night with the ensuing applause a perfect finale.

Set list: "21 Today", "Abide With Me" [Dave/Mandy Scott-Morgan, Martin Smith and musicians from Birmingham Conservatoire]; "Mulberry Bush", "The Company Of Wolves" [Steady Hands]; "Lamb To The Slaughter, "Hey Buddy", "The Chain", "I Shall Be Released", "Come Together" [Steve Gibbons/Dave Pegg]; "Say It Ain't So"; "Life Is Life"; "England" [Quill]; "21 Today" [All]

CAUGHT LIVE [5]: ROY WOOD ROCK & ROLL BAND

Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! A buoyant and confident Roy Wood returned to The Robin 2 in Bilston near Wolverhampton with his Rock 'n' Roll Band last night [Tuesday 18th November] to deliver a stunning and thoroughly enjoyable seventy [70] minute brass tinged 'ec-sax-tic' trawl through his Move, Wizzard and solo career to date.
Roy, the founding member of The Move, ELO and Wizzard, completely captivated the healthy throng set before him from start to finish and was completely comfortable on stage as he grappled with his errant bagpipes again and managed to lose another knob! This concert was more than a warm-up for next month's Christmas Show, it was almost a mutual appreciation society meeting between this much underrated songwriter, musician and multi-instrumentalist at home on stage before his admirers. The sound was spot on and Roy's Rock 'n' Roll Band were again polished and note perfect. A favourite is hard to select but, for me, "See My Baby Jive" stole the show. Grab a ticket for the Christmas Show while you still can!
Roy's annual bagpipe wrestling display is always a highlight!
Set list: "Brontosaurus" [Intro], "California Man", "Ball Park Incident", "Kiss Me Goodnight, Boadicea", "Fire Brigade", "Big Girls Blues", "New York City", "I Can Hear The Grass Grow", "Angel Fingers", "Roy's Revenge", "Are You Ready To Rock?", "See My Baby Jive", "Flowers In The Rain", "Blackberry Way", "I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday"
Next up is Roy's Christmas bash with RickWakeman and Andy Fairweather Low & The Low Riders at Birmingham Symphony Hall followed by a gig in Holmfirth, Yorkshire. Hence, there are only two [2] further opportunities for you to see: Roy Wood live in 2014, at the time of writing, thus:

REVIEW: THE ART OF McCARTNEY

Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! Make no mistake about it, any fears that a Paul McCartney tribute album by various artistes would somehow come up short of the mark and disappoint are dispelled as soon as Billy Joel launches into a rasping "Maybe I'm Amazed", Heart deliver an impressive "Band On The Run" and Steve Miller adds his familiar take on "Juniors Farm" well before Jeff Lynne's much anticipated "Junk" arrives on the scene.

"Junk", a song written by McCartney in 1968 and featured on his first solo album "McCartney" in 1970 [alongside an instrumental version entitled "Singalong Junk"], sees Jeff performing all instruments bar the keyboard contribution of Steve Jay with Executive Producer Ralph Sall overseeing a track, just 2:13 in length, which sees the ELO maestro seem to recover that lost octave and deliver a stunning version that could truly be said to be ELO Beatles Together!

If there is a problem with this album, it's that it is difficult to single out too many favourites due to the quality of the thirty eight [38] tracks included therein. If I mention Paul Rodgers' "Let Me Roll It", then I have to also recommend the storming "Jet" by Robin Zander and Rick Neilsen of Cheap Trick or Allen Toussaint's rendition of "Lady Madonna" or the surprising "Eleanor Rigby" by Alice Cooper. This album not only showcases the immense and familiar songwriting of 'Macca', it reminds the listeners how this particular Beatle [with his Wings and solo songbooks too] are well and truly rooted in modern music culture. Add to that the contributions by Jeff's Wilbury buddy Bob Dylan, Yusuf [Cat Stevens], Roger Daltrey if not all thirty or so artistes [who all deserve a mention] and you really do a have a release here that should only really be reviewed one-on-one by buying it yourself. [10/10]
"The Art Of McCartney" features 36 songs on two CD's plus an excellent DVD on the making of the album with the Amazon Deluxe Exclusive edition sporting two [2] bonus tracks. Find out more about the album, the songs and the artists via the official web site thus:

Mike Burney was an integral part of the Wizzard sound ...
Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! On behalf of his many admirers, Yours Truly KJS and ELO Beatles Forever [ELOBF] would like to extend our sympathies and condolences to his wife Sue and the family.
Mike wrote "Rob Roy's Nightmare [A Bit More H.A.]", the 'B' side to 1973's "I Wish It Could be Christmas Everyday". Last year, a benefit concert was held for Mike during the 2013 Birmingham International Jazz & Blues Festival which featured Roy Wood and his Rock 'n' Roll Band, The Steve Gibbons Band, King Pleasure & The Biscuit Boys, Steve Ajao and The Old Horns Band [who featured former Wizzard band mates Nick Pentelow and Charlie Grima in their ranks] thus:

CAUGHT LIVE: JIM ONSLOW

Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! Mention the name Jim Onslow and immediately you are reminded of his immense contribution to 'Brum Beat' trailblazers Gerry Levene & The Avengers as well as, of course, Denny Laine & The Diplomats and not a few other famed Midlands bands. But there is much more to his career. The man who shared the stage with The Beatles at The Cavern, Roy Wood, Bev Bevan, Graeme Edge [later of The Moody Blues] has also enjoyed a rewarding solo career based in and around the West Midlands and Shropshire since. For those reasons, a trip to see Jim Onslow performing at one of his solo shows has, for me, been long overdue so the twenty [20] mile jaunt to Newport to see him perform last night [Saturday 8th November] at the welcoming Royal Naval Association Club was a real must.

In a set that covered five decades of music, Jim delivered an entertaining and amiable performance of over forty [40] songs supported by his own recorded backing tracks. Jim sang and played the guitar in a fashion that much reminded me of those wonderful solo gigs by Kelly Groucutt in the nineties. Highlights, for me, were many but his versions of "You Got It", "Out Of Time" and "I Saw Her Standing There" were memorable. Jim [and his wife Annie] were very open and accommodating and we talked extensively about his career up until the present day. It was a real pleasure to meet up with him and to see a 'proper' musician performing real music at a time when pubs, clubs and venues are struggling to survive. BLUE PLAQUE PROJECT UNVEILS KELLY GROUCUTT HIDDEN GEMS

Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! Another aspect of the Kelly Groucutt Commemorative Blue Plaque Kickstarter campaign will see his family begin sharing the unveiling of some of the unreleased material that Kelly left them on his studio computers and music hard drives via an EP and/or other media. There is also the intention to release a tribute album of new interpretations of his material combined with some of those 'lost' recordings recently discovered.

The Groucutt family have just released a short video on YouTube [see above] with Chris and Robin talking about their work on the project. In the background, you can hear those much missed Kelly vocals on The Beatles' classics "Nowhere Man" and "Eleanor Rigby". A real taste of what is to come.

At the time of writing, Kelly Groucutt Commemorative Blue Plaque Kickstarter campaign has already raised over 50% of the £2,250 goal. The promise of the new Kelly material as well as the long overdue recognition of the proposed Blue Plaque makes this campaign all the more worthy of our support. Please consider contributing to this wonderful project and play your part in making sure that the memory of Mick 'Kelly' Groucutt is enshrined for this generation and those to come thus:

CAUGHT LIVE [7]: QUILL @ LUDLOW 06/11/14

Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! Quill arrived at the homely Ludlow Assembly Rooms in deepest, darkest Shropshire last night [Thursday 6th November] for the latest leg of their 2014/2015 theatre tour and delivered yet another top class and articulate live performance mixing their own exceptional material with interpretations of classics by the likes of Fleetwood MacThe Eagles, Thin Lizzy, Led Zeppelin, Train and Steve Earle.
Cooper & Davies delivered another stunning support set ably assisted by Graham Clews
This was the second occasion on which Bridgnorth based acoustic duo Cooper & Davies had been asked to share the stage with Quill and, once again, they were exceptional - especially with the added contribution of Graham Clews - and they produced an impressive set which included their own songs "Everything And More" and "I Never Said I Was Funny" intermingled with covers of "Bye Bye Love" [Everly Brothers] and "Cocaine" [Eric Clapton] amongst not a few others. They looked and sounded assured on stage. always a good indicator of natural talent. Believe it or not, their 2013 EP: "The Coach House Sessions" has an ELO connection too as it is mastered by and produced by none other than: Rob Groucutt, who is the son, of course, of the late, great ELO, OrKestra and Orchestra bassist/vocalist Kelly!
Quill again were supreme with another sublime and professional performance under their belt at the end of the evening. This time around one or three new things struck me. The first was the wonderful vocal range and clarity of voice of Matt Davies, particularly with his lead on "Drops Of Jupiter". The second was the relative ease with which Tony Kelsey has slotted into the bands identity with his stunning guitar craft. And the third was the absolutely thrilling synchronicity of drummer Tim Tandler with percussionist Bev Bevan. At times they were almost as one giving me a good idea of the concept of the sound that twin drums can add to a band - as they did with Wizzard, for example. Add those facets to the wonderful talents of Joy Strachan-Brain, Kate McWilliam and Dave Bailey, and you then begin to  understand what endears Quill to their loyal fan base and what has kept them at the top of their game over what is now four decades.

Quill set list: "Tumbling Years"; "Stairway To Heaven"; "Take It Easy"; "Duelling Banjos"; "Say It Ain't So"; "Drops Of Jupiter"; "The Chain"; "Jig A Jig"; "Going Home"; "Life Is Life"; "Nine Mile Camp"; "Galway Girl"; "The Celtic Experience"; "England"; "Whiskey In The Jar"
Quill are: Joy Strachan-Brain [Vocals/percussion]; Dave Bailey [Keyboards/guitar/vocals]; Kate McWilliam [Violin/keyboards/recorder/vocals]; Tim Tandler [Drums]; Tony Kelsey [Guitars/mandolin/vocals]; Matt Davies [Bass/vocals]; Bev Bevan [Percussion]
Next up for Quill is an appearance at the 21 Today event at Birmingham Town Hall on Thursday 20th November. Their official web site includes the up-to-date band information including: News, Discography, Merchandise, Gig Guide, Gallery and Links thus:
