PAUL WELLER & BEV BEVAN: WAKE UP THE NATION

Wake Up The Nation: Tracks #1 & #2 feature Bev Bevan ...
Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! There appears to be a more significant link between the great Paul Weller, The Move and our beloved Electric Light Orchestra [ELO].

Reference my recent blog entitled Changing Overture or 10538 Man?, you may also already be aware that Bev Bevan has guested on drums for two [2] tracks on Paul's new album "Wake Up The Nation". Bev indeed makes an appearance on the title track and "Moonshine". Here are the words on Paul's official web site describing "Moonshine":

“Bev Bevan [The Move/ELO] plays drums on this one. Simon and I are big psychedelic music fans, so it was a real buzz. I was back to being a ten year old Move fan again.”

REVIEW THE REVIEW?

Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! Some strange fellow has posted this review of the "Wondrous Stories" compilation CD over on amazon.co.uk:

3.0 out of 5 stars Message to a new musical generation18 July 2010
This review is from: Wondrous Stories (Audio CD)
Any new compilation that attempts to open up a new generation of music fans to a genre that produced so many interesting and imaginative songwriters and artistes is to be applauded. This writer considers the works of the likes of Mike Oldfield et al to be somewhat under-rated. But a compilation that includes the song that started it all for the Electric Light Orchestra too [10538 Overture]; inspired by the Beatles' "I Am The Walrus" deserves much credit. This two disc set is well worth the investment for discerning music fans looking for their next purchase.

CAUGHT LIVE: THE ELO EXPERIENCE

Judging by the packed audience at The Theatre Severn in Shrewsbury; their absolute enthusiasm and the special atmosphere of the night of Thursday 15th July; there can be no doubt that The ELO Experience [born in Hull circa 2006] have matured and  found their place as the premier tribute act to the musical genius of Jeff Lynne and the Electric Light Orchestra [ELO]. Personal recommendations from the like of Kelly Groucutt and Mik Kaminski support that claim.

Yours Truly KJS ventured over to Shrewsbury on Thursday night to catch the band in concert and met up with some old and not-so-old "friends electric". My first surprise was that there two new members on the stage who I'd not seen at previous gigs by The ELO Experience over at The Robin 2. Yes! We had two lady cellists adding to the atmosphere and sonic symphony of this act.

We heard all the ELO classics as one would expect; all reproduced with verve and professionalism. But the second and most touching and exciting surprise was the inclusion of a classic ELO album track in the set list. For the first time ever; I heard the outstanding "Out Of The Blue" song "Big Wheels" live complete with orchestrations et al! It was simply spellbinding and fantastic all at once! The two hour show was capped [of course] with the classic ELO anthem "Mr. Blue Sky".

There was a fair selection of "ELO Experience" merchandise on sale in the theatre lobby before, during and after the concert in a theatre that can only be described as first class in terms of acoustics and aesthetics. A value-for-money, accurate and informative ten [10] page brochure which detailed the history of ELO from The Move through to ELO Part II, The Orchestra [and the story of The ELO Experience too] was a good buy with a ten [10] track CD on sale, as well as other items.

The band were true to their word after the gig in that they were busy talking, meeting, greeting the audience and signing anything they were requested to! This writer resisted the temptation to join the throng and approached lead singer/guitarist Andy Louis for a quick chat at the end of proceedings. He was very obliging and we discussed several topics including potential new songs to try, the twin deaths of their much-missed bassist Pete Allison just a short while after that of our beloved Kelly Groucutt and their desire for a virtuoso violinist too! I have to say that - after attending not a few ELO and related gigs over the last twenty [20] or so years - this band was the most approachable and accommodating bunch of chaps I have met for quite a while. Indeed, Andy collared the rest of the band for an impromptu photograph avec moi on his own volition [see above]. Julie nervously took the picture with my mobile 'phone and what a good 'un it is... but with apologies to their new bass player Pete Johnson ... of whom you can only see approximately 33%!

Please consider going to see The ELO Experience if they happen to be performing in a town or city near you. Professional tribute bands keep the ELO fan base ticking along between tours by The OrchestraELO re-issues and 'new' Jeff Lynne albums. Visit their official web site here:

The ELO Experience are: Pete Johnson [Bass/Vocals], Tony Lawson [Drums/Percussion], Jan Christiansen [Lead Guitar/Vocals], Andy Louis [Lead Vocals/Guitar], Steve Hemsley [Keyboards/Vocals], Viv Blackledge [Cello], Marissa Steer [Cello]

HERE IS THE NEWS [3]

Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! Here Is The News from Wolverhampton's very own "Express & Star" newspaper yesterday [Friday 16th July] on the subject of the latest fundraising activities of ELO drum legend Bev Bevan:

"A charity golf day organised by a Midland rock star raised nearly £17,000 for the Help For Heroes charity. Former Move and Electric Light Orchestra star Bev Bevan teamed up with Brummie pal, comedian Jasper Carrott, to start a day of golf and entertainment. The golf day, at Aston Wood Golf Club between Lichfield and Sutton Coldfield, featured 18 teams of four in a shotgun start golf competition. Winner was the team of Aston Wood professional Tim Reagan, former Aston Villa players Steve Staunton and Pat Heard, and former West Bromwich Building Society chief executive Steven Karle. In the evening a charity banquet was entertained with music from the Bev Bevan Band. Simon Smith, general manager at Aston Wood Golf Club, said: "It was a fantastic event and we are thrilled to have raised so much money for such a good cause." Simon also staged a trick shot show as part of the day. Individuals and companies from around the region sponsored each of the 18 holes. Bev Bevan and Jasper Carrott went to school together and also worked at the old Beehive department store in Birmingham before achieving fame. Bev, who now presents a show on Radio WM, was also featured on tracks on Paul Weller's latest album: Wake Up The Nation"

It's also interesting that this article mentions the fact that Bev features on Paul Weller's new album "Wake Up The Nation" in light of my previous article on the link between Paul's "Changing Man" and ELO's "10538 Overture" here.

CHANGING OVERTURE or 10538 MAN?

A modern music controversy?
Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! Yours Truly KJS has always been struck as to remarkable similarities between the guitar riff of ELO's "10538 Overture" [1971] and Paul Weller's "The Changing Man" [1995], not forgetting The Beatles' "Dear Prudence" too. So, after a little 'research', I've now added both songs as Favourites on the ELO Beatles Forever YouTube channel for you to listen to, enjoy and compare plus a version by Def Leppard [2006] to surprise and/or even confuse you thus:

What "Do Ya" think folks? Are these versions close cousins or "Something Else"?

RECOMMENDED: LIVE - THE EARLY YEARS [ELO]

Hello ... Hello ... my old friends ... It's great to see you once again! You may recall my article on 25th May entitled NEW ELO DVD RELEASE: LIVE - THE EARLY YEARS. In that article, Yours Truly KJS mentioned that it was available for pre-order from Play.com, I am now pleased to inform you that said DVD is indeed being released on Monday 9th August and is also now available for pre-order from amazon.co.uk too - also for the princely sum of just £8.99!

Personally, I wish Sony would release a proper ELO video hits collection and that whoever owns the publishing rights to the ELO Part II gig with the MSO back in 1991 - originally released by Telstar [#TVE1037] - would also do likewise. Then we really would be talking ...
